GARY HINSCHE

By Design

This exhibition by Gary Hinsche positions Hard-Edge not as a relic of the modernist past, but as a living framework—one that continues to inspire artists who seek clarity in a world saturated with noise. The exhibition before you explores the striking clarity and formal discipline of Hard-Edge design—an artistic movement that emerged in the mid-20th century as a bold counterpoint to the gestural chaos of Abstract Expressionism. Defined by sharp contours, flat planes of color, and geometric precision, Hard-Edge art emphasizes control, balance, and visual clarity.

In this collection, we celebrate the aesthetic rigor and conceptual depth of the Hard-Edge tradition while also examining its evolution and resonance in contemporary practices. Each piece on display speaks to a unique negotiation between simplicity and complexity, where the absence of expressive brushwork invites viewers into a meditative dialogue with form, color, and space. Rather than narrating stories, these works embody a kind of visual logic—a language of symmetry, repetition, and contrast. They challenge our perception by stripping composition down to its essence, drawing attention to how we see, how we feel through color, and how order itself can be a mode of expression. The artwork Random Discipline walks the line between whimsy and structure.

Art Statement

I am a Graphic Designer. I have enjoyed an incredible life in the world of DESIGN. My mentor, my partner, and my dear friend, Robert Miles Runyan, introduced me to a world I couldn’t even imagine as a young graphic designer. DESIGN morphed into a lifestyle…a way of life. My friends were Architects, Designers, Painters, Photographers, and creative Giants. Our clients were Fortune 100 and 500 Companies. Our clients were Global. LA was home, LA was creatively alive, and we didn’t know it was happening; we certainly didn’t think we were part of it. Looking back, it was magical.

I was fascinated by hard-edge painting, geometric abstraction, and color field painting. Many of the artists I admire were graphic designers, including Josef Albers, Frank Stella, Keith Haring, Sol LeWitt, and Andy Warhol. Everything they did was designed and conceptual. That’s what DESIGN is all about. Sol Lewitt believed that the IDEA was more important than the finished piece; again, that’s design. I would argue that Ellsworth Kelly was a brilliant designer; everything he did was founded on an IDEA. That’s who I am, a Graphic Designer. Everything I do is based on an IDEA, a concept. When I design for a client, that’s design. When I design for myself, that’s ART.
